Scaled wings and a coiled feeding tube. Butterflies hold wings up at rest; moths rest with wings flat.

What to look for

  • Broad, scaled wings
  • Coiled proboscis for feeding
  • Butterflies rest wings up; moths flat
  • Active by day (most butterflies)

Day-flying moths count here too — look for feathery antennae.
